The fifth session of "High-quality Education Teaching Action Plan Lecture Series" of Business School was successfully held

On the afternoon of December 6, 2023, Professor Xing Xiaoqiang, Director of the Scientific Research Office at the University of International Business and Economics and a professor in the International Business School as well as a doctoral supervisor, was invited to deliver an insightful lecture on "Management Case Development and Curriculum Thinking and Politics" for faculty members and graduate students of Business School. The session was chaired by Associate Professor Zhu Rong, who serves as the Director of the Business Administration Teaching and Research Section.
Professor Xing Xiaoqiang has been recognized with several prestigious awards including being named one of the first Ministry of Education's exemplary ideological and political teaching instructors, a Beijing Youth Teaching Teacher, and having his enterprise teaching cases selected among the "National 100 Excellent Management Cases" in 2019, 2020, and 2022. He has also won first prize twice at Tsinghua University's "Excellent Developer" case competition in both 2019 and 2021.
During his lecture, Professor Xing shared his extensive experience in developing teaching cases while addressing two fundamental questions regarding management cases: “what is it?” and “how can it be done?”. Initially, he explored the relationship between management theory and teaching cases which prompted reflections on "what constitutes management theory." He illustrated this concept through several classic management theories to elucidate three core constructs—concepts, relationships, and situations—and their interconnections within management theory. Subsequently, he detailed various reasoning methods utilized in management research alongside representative case studies. Building upon this foundation, he linked case development directly to management theory. Drawing from his experiences with Bytedances poverty alleviation initiatives, he provided clear yet profound insights into effectively answering “how to develop management cases.”
Furthermore,Professor Xing offered valuable perspectives on the case development process itself. He underscored that creating teaching cases is inherently iterative; thus, adopting a product manager's mindset towards crafting these educational tools is essential for success. This entails thorough preparation during initial stages coupled with meticulous design considerations for writing structure so that resulting teaching cases can exceed expectations across multiple dimensions.
With engaging language characterized by clarity humor along with vivid examples,Professor Xing delivered an exceptional lecture that resonated deeply with both teachersstudents. He not only imparted practical skills related to writing effective teaching cases but also integrated their development within scientific research endeavors, thereby providing innovative ideas for harmonizing instructional activitiesresearch work.
