To better align with the digital transformation strategy of our school's business department and to further explore reforms in digital course offerings, the Department of Business Administration at Business School convened a seminar on 'Digital Course Construction in Operation Management' on November 23, 2023.
The meeting featured esteemed guests including Zhang Xiaogang, Deputy Director of the Economic and Management Experimental Teaching Center at Renmin University of China and Secretary-General of the Economic and Management Working Committee for the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Innovation Alliance; as well as Deng Chunping, Director of the Department of Business Administration, Deputy Director Zhu Rong, faculty members from the 'Operation Management' course group, relevant graduate students, totaling approximately 20 participants. The meeting was chaired by Director Deng Chunping.
Prior to commencing discussions, Fu Shilun, Secretary of the Party Committee at Business School, extended a warm welcome to Director Zhang Xiaogang. Secretary Fu elaborated on strategic decisions regarding digital transformation within business school and highlighted advancements in talent training amidst this transition while inviting continued support from Director Zhang for ongoing initiatives related to digital transformation.
As proceedings began officially, Wang Ying from the Operation Management Course Group presented a report titled 'Reflections on Digital Course Construction in Operation Management,' which primarily addressed objectives for constructing digital courses; explored connections between knowledge graphs and digital curricula; outlined concepts for digitizing Operation Management education; and discussed characteristics associated with 'big case' (experimental) teaching methodologies.
Following this presentation, Director Zhang Xiaogang provided comprehensive feedback on Teacher Wang Ying's report along with valuable recommendations for course development—such as establishing dynamic knowledge graphs; adopting innovative digital textbooks; creating an online teaching platform tailored for digital learning environments; and developing 'lightweight' situational courses. He emphasized that a key focus should be placed on building a responsive system integrating large language models with knowledge graphs.
During an interactive session towards conclusion where teachers posed numerous inquiries regarding aspects of constructing digital curricula, Director Zhang patiently addressed each question individually.
The core curriculum subject ‘Operation Management’ is pivotal within business administration majors. Under Sun Yongbo’s leadership—who oversees this course—and through collaborative efforts among all instructors involved in its delivery significant pedagogical experience has been amassed leading to notable achievements such as producing ‘Production and Operations Management,’ recognized as part of China's 11th Five-Year Plan textbook initiative for higher education institutions. However traditional instructional methods present certain limitations necessitating exploration into leveraging opportunities afforded by digital transformation to enhance educational outcomes effectively.
This seminar serves not only as guidance but also provides foundational insights into advancing operational management's digitization efforts within our department while offering conceptual frameworks beneficial across broader curricular developments throughout our institution.
