"Warm Winter Day" -- Business School carried out the winter solstice dumpling making activity

The winter solstice heralds the return of spring. Following this celestial event, days gradually lengthen, Yang energy becomes more pronounced, and the sun re-emerges from the southern hemisphere, signaling that spring is on the horizon. With only one month remaining in 2023, the winter solstice stands as both the final solar term of the year and a significant celebration of winter. In various regions of northern China, it is customary to consume dumplings during this time—a practice symbolizing 'dispelling cold' and 'reunion.' To enrich graduate students' cultural experiences on campus and deepen their understanding of traditional solar terms while fostering a sense of warmth amidst winter's chill, Business School organized a "Warm Winter Day" themed around dumpling-making on December 22.

As a cherished Chinese tradition, dumpling preparation embodies not just culinary skill but also unity and collaboration among participants. During this event, students gathered around tables to craft dumplings while sharing amusing anecdotes.

Occasionally exchanging their unique “secret recipes,” they deftly shaped round dumplings that filled each table. Engaging in conversation while savoring their creations fostered an atmosphere rich with warmth reminiscent of home.
When steaming dumplings were presented at last, an enticing aroma enveloped the room. Students eagerly sampled their “fruits of labor,” awakening taste buds with delightful flavors cascading over their lips—each enjoying bowls filled with joy and warmth.
On this warm winter day infused with fragrant dumplings, not only did this activity enhance campus cultural life but it also strengthened student unity and cohesion; though small in size, these dumplings conveyed care and warmth—each plump morsel encapsulating delicious fillings alongside heartfelt sentiments for business camaraderie.

The Winter Solstice—also referred to as South Solstice or Winter Festival—carries both natural significance and cultural depth. It represents one of the key solar terms within China's 24-solar-term system as well as being recognized as a traditional folk festival dedicated to ancestor worship. The Winter Solstice ranks among four major seasonal festivals celebrated throughout history; ancient customs regarded it as equally important as New Year celebrations due to its profound implications for agricultural cycles. Regional variations exist regarding specific practices associated with this occasion: Southern China often observes ancestral sacrifices accompanied by feasting during the Winter Solstice whereas Northern traditions prominently feature eating dumplings annually.
