Overview

The BTBU Business School was established in November 2008 through the merger of the former School of Business and the former School of Accounting. With a long history and a strong foundation, the School has distinctive features and a high reputation within China. In 1995, it set up a specialized direction for CPA (Certified Public Accountant) studies, becoming one of the earliest financial institutions in the country to enroll students in this field. In 2002, it pioneered the establishment of an all-English experimental class for accounting, which has been continuously recruiting students. In 2003, it obtained the right to jointly cultivate doctoral students in accounting. In 2010, it was authorized to offer a Master’s degree in Accounting (MPAcc), and it began admitting full-time MPAcc students in 2011. As of now, graduates include the classes of 2011 (26 students), 2012 (29 students), 2013 (38 students), 2014 (66 students), 2015 (78 students), and 2016 (75 students), with the 2017 (92 students) and 2018 (60 full-time, 40 part-time) classes currently enrolled. In 2018, the MPAcc program underwent comprehensive reforms and began admitting part-time MPAcc students. In the inaugural national evaluation of professional degree programs in 2018, our MPAcc program was rated B- out of 199 authorized institutions (with 60 institutions eligible for evaluation).

Cultivating Pattern

1. Dual Mentor System: Each MPAcc student is guided by both an academic mentor and a practical mentor from outside the university. The external mentor participates in thesis supervision, MPAcc course instruction, and lecture delivery.

2. Integration of Classroom Teaching and Corporate Practice: Each course is taught by a team of two or more instructors, with external mentors also involved. Course leaders can arrange for students to conduct in-depth visits to companies or invite external mentors to deliver courses focused on practical business experience.

3. “CPA/CFO” Lecture Series: The School organizes regular lectures featuring CFOs from renowned companies and partners from well-known accounting firms. These lectures focus on practical frontiers to expand students’ horizons and deepen their understanding of business practices.

4. Customized Strategy for Specific Enterprise: A six-month internship is arranged during the study period. Students are encouraged to intern at the practice units where existing accounting issues can be chosen as thesis topics, aiming to provide solutions for these issues.

5. Case Teaching and Development: The teaching primarily employs case studies, encouraging the development of original cases and the use of case libraries or published cases. The curriculum includes case discussions and analysis reports to develop students’ case analysis skills. MPAcc faculty members organize students to develop instructional cases and participate in the selection of National MPAcc Outstanding Teaching Cases or the National MBA Top 100 Teaching Cases. Students are also encouraged to take part in national competitions such as the National MPAcc Student Case Competition, the Challenge Cup Entrepreneurship Competition, or other nationwide case competitions.

Faculty Team

The MPAcc program currently has 167 students and 49 full-time faculty members. Among the faculty, 63.3% hold associate professor or higher titles, and 77.6% have doctoral degrees, ensuring a high level of both theoretical and practical teaching. The student-to-faculty ratio is 3.1:1, effectively ensuring faculty members’ time and effort in guiding students.

There are 70 external practice mentors, mainly comprising chairpersons, presidents, or CFOs (or chief accountants) of large enterprises or listed companies. They play a significant role in practical guidance and come from central and state-owned enterprises such as Ernst & Young, Accenture, Sinopec, Sinochem, AVIC, China Railway, China Coal, China International Travel Service, COSCO, SPIC, BOE Technology Group, Financial Street Holdings, Beijing Capital International Airport, and CENTEK, as well as well-known private enterprises like Easyhome and Gome.
